Brake Failure Suspected In Fairfield California Bus Crash

FAIRFIELD – California

The California Highway Patrol is investigating brake failure Tuesday, as the possible cause of a bus crash on Interstate Highway 80 near Fairfield on Monday afternoon.

The United Coach Tours bus had 49 people aboard when it drove off of the westbound I-80 freeway, and into a fence around 4:30 p.m. It came to rest on the side of Lyon Road, which runs parallel to the I-80, said CHP Officer Richard Weaver.

The bus was on its way to San Francisco from Sacramento with passengers onboard who were returning from a lobbying outing, Weaver said.

Twenty passengers suffered minor injuries, including pain and bruising, and 13 went to hospitals where they were treated and released, Weaver said.

The bus driver, a 38-year-old Yunzho Ma, told investigators that she was having trouble with the air brakes on the right side of the bus, Weaver said.

Ma said she was driving at about 70 mph, and when she tried to slow down the brakes failed, Weaver said.

She then steered to the right and went through the fence, he said.

There were skid marks on the road, possibly indicating that the brakes had locked up, Weaver said.

Ma has worked for the South San Francisco charter bus company since 2004, Weaver said.

CHP officers from the agency’s Solano County office were investigating whether brake failure caused the crash, Weaver said.

California snowstorms leave one dead and dozens injured in 40 vehicle pile-up

Scene of the 40 vehicle pileup west the Yuba Gap

A huge 40 vehicle pile-up has left one man dead and several others injured, after heavy snowfalls battered the Sierra Nevada region of California.

The busy Interstate 80 was shut for several hours 70 miles north east of Sacramento while emergency services battled to clear the road after a big rig carrying highly explosive liquid Hydrogen jack-knifed.

The tanker blocked both lanes and as it turned onto its side dozens of cars and trucks ploughed into its side.

Auburn resident Douglas Swasey, in his 60s, was killed in the accident.

The truck was not damaged, officials confirmed, but had it done the hydrogen could have exploded causing even more fatalities.

Three feet of snow fell, creating hazardous conditions for drivers on mountain roads.

The crash at 1.30pm on Friday left the I-80 shut for several hours and caused massive tailbacks, with the route not opening until early this morning.

One driver told News 10 he heard the sound of metal hitting metal for five minutes after the first impact.

More than a dozen other people taken to hospitals in Sacramento and Reno with minor or moderate injuries.

Another driver, Ty Bombach who tried to help the injured told the press: ‘We found a gentleman by the liquid hydrogen truck and I checked his vitals but he was already gone.

I was surprised more people weren’t hurt because of the carnage that was there when we got there and what followed.’

Blizzards and snow up to three feet deep will hit the Sierra Nevada region falling as low as 4,000 feet and will continue over the weekend.

The storms will bring flooding rains, snow and strong winds across much of California.

Heavy rain will affect the central coast and valleys to the Southland from late tonight until Monday, which could bring possible flooding and mudslides.

Coastal regions will suffer up to three inches of rain but south and west-facing foothills and mountains could have as much as seven inches of rain.

Make sure you take it easy out there on the highways.

6 People killed in Greyhound Bus Accident near Fresno.

Fresno Greyhound Bus Accident

Scene of horrific Greyound Bus Accident

FRESNO, Calif. — A Greyhound bus carrying 47 people and traveling to Sacramento from Los Angeles crashed on a highway in California’s Central Valley on Thursday, killing six and injuring many others.

California Highway Patrol Officer Michelle Sigmond said the bus driver swerved to try to avoid another crash involving an overturned SUV and slammed into a concrete center divider and then struck another vehicle shortly after 2 a.m. just outside downtown Fresno. The bus went down an embankment, hit a eucalyptus tree and came to rest on a freeway off-ramp with its front end smashed and tree branches jutting into the vehicle.

Twisted pieces of metal, broken glass and torn clothing littered the ground around the accident scene.

Arlen Snider, who had been traveling from Phoenix to Sacramento to visit his mother, said he was asleep in the middle section of the bus when the crash occurred. She awoke to the smell of smoke and injured passengers all around her.

“I woke up on the floor of the bus and started helping people off the bus,” Snider, who escaped uninjured, said after arriving in Sacramento’s bus terminal Thursday morning.

In addition to the six dead – four women and two men, including the driver – several people were hurt with injuries that ranged from critical to bruises and cuts, said CHP Officer Kirk Arnold.

It’s unclear if all of the fatalities were on the bus.

“I had just woke up and I heard a boom once, and a boom again and the next thing I know we were down this embankment,” Linda Gee, a passenger on the bus, told KMPH-TV in Fresno.

“I’m alive and I thank god I’m alive,” she said. “There was just bleeding everywhere.”

The bus departed Los Angeles late Wednesday and stopped in Fresno before continuing on its route to Sacramento. It was on its way to Madera for one of about eight scheduled stops when the crash occurred, according to Greyhound spokeswoman Bonnie Bastian.

A relief bus was sent to take nine passengers who wanted to continue on to their destinations.

Northbound lanes of Highway 99, a major route through the San Joaquin Valley, have been closed since the crash.

New California State Laws for the Second Decade of the 21st Century; The Year 2010; I think our State Legislatures have too much time on their hands! Read Below.

A Summary of California Laws for the year 2010Below is a summary of new laws for the State of California for 2010. Most will be going into effect on Friday morning.

Remember you are deemed to know the law; ignorance of the law is no excuse for violating it.

AB 9 (J. Perez) – Political Reform Act: FPPC – this law clarifies what constitutes improper campaign activity by a local government or agency during an election for a candidate or initiative.

AB 14 A motor vehicle can be declared be a public nuisance and impounded for up to 30 days when the motor vehicle is used in the commission of specified crimes related to prostitution.

AB 58 Now an Infraction to participate in a betting pool with less than $2,500 at stake.

AB 91 New “Ignition Interlock Device” Law requires first-time DUI offenders to install a device in their vehicles in a test program in Alameda, Los Angeles, Sacramento and Tulare counties.

AB 144 (Ma) – Last year in San Francisco, law enforcement confiscated over 1,000 illegal disabled placards. The widespread abuse has not only taken away parking opportunities for people who really need them, but has also exacerbated the difficult parking environment in San Francisco. The current penalty is a $100 fine.

AB 144 not only increases the fine for fraudulent use to $1,000, but also gives parking control officers the ability to cite violators. Currently, only police officers have the ability to cite violators in many instances.

AB 166 (Lieu) – Creates a cost-effective solution to deal with the growing number of abandoned boats in California’s waterways. The bill will establish a vessel turn-in program that permits boat owners to transfer ownership of their dilapidated vessels before they become an environmental hazard.

AB 171 (Jones) – Establishes basic consumer protection standards governing credit cards and loan products that are arranged in dental offices. The law is designed to protect elderly, low-income or limited-English-speaking dental patients who unwittingly signed credit card applications. The new law prohibits arranging credit while patients are under anesthesia, requires notice in the patient’s primary language, and requires refunds if dental services have not been provided within 15 days.

AB 232 (Hill) – Allows the California State Teachers Retirement System to implement technology improvements such as switching from paper transactions with customers to online and e-mail transactions. The changes will reduce environmental impacts and save the state about $1 million annually.

AB 242 (Nava) – Strengthens penalties for spectatorship at a dogfight in California.

Hospital misplaced Baby’s Body for Days

Sacramento Medical Malpractice AttorneySacramento – California

A premature baby, born at 20 weeks, died just two short hours after entering the world. Shortly after; baby Autumn’s body was lost at Kaiser Permanente and was not found for six days, as reported by CBS 13.

As the parents of baby Autumn were making the heart wrenching funeral arrangements, representatives of Kaiser alerted the grieving parents that the hospital somehow lost track of their baby girl’s body. For six agonizing days, Autumn’s family was left wondering what happened to their little girl. Hospital officials then told the family that her body was found in a pathology department refrigerator and was somehow mistaken of an ice pack.

A spokesperson for Kaiser released a statement saying, “Due to patient privacy laws we are not able to discuss the details of any individual patient matter. In a case such as the one described we would offer our sincere apologies, work around the clock to investigate every possible avenue that could lead to an explanation and resolution of such a painful situation, and reach out to those involved to offer comfort and support. Our heart would go out to any family for the pain they would suffer and the additional burden a situation like this would place upon them. We would not rest until we understood exactly what occurred and had taken steps to prevent it from ever happening again.”

Do not Walk or Run into Freeway Lanes; A CHP Warning to Pedestrians

Capital City Freeway Accident Pedestrian on freeway killedThe California Highway Patrol is warning people to stay out of freeway lanes; even if they have spilled or dropped something from their vehicle; after a woman was fatally struck Saturday morning while trying to retrieve a lost box on the Capital City California Freeway.

Instead, people should pull over in a safe place and call the CHP for help, said spokeswoman Officer Lizz Dutton.

“You never want to be running out in the freeway,” she said. “Ever.”

About 6 a.m. Saturday, a woman died after being struck multiple times by cars as she tried to retrieve a box of hooded sweat shirts that had fallen from the pickup truck she was riding in, Dutton said.

She and a friend, who was driving, apparently were on their way to sell the sweat shirts, possibly at an open air market, Dutton said.

At least one box came loose from the secured load and spilled onto eastbound Capital City Freeway just west of Watt Avenue. The driver pulled over, and the woman ran out into the slow lane when an approaching vehicle struck her.

The driver of that car saw her and tried to brake, but was unable to avoid the woman, Dutton said. Upon impact, the woman was thrown into the next lane, where she was again hit by vehicles. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Tuesday, the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office was still trying to identify the woman.

Dutton said alcohol and drugs do not appear to be involved in the incident. Instead, it appears to be an unfortunate accident resulting from unsafe actions, she said.

The woman was wearing dark clothes at the time of the accident, it was still dark outside, and, Dutton said, “pedestrians don’t belong in the roadway.”

Van tried to evade head-on Collision east of Meridian, CA.

Meridian, Yuba City California Personal Injury and Wrongful Death Attorney LawyerThe driver of a van carrying 10 unbelted passengers swerved to try and avoid the head-on collision that killed a Yuba City woman, a California Highway Patrol official said Monday.

Lorretta Lynn Deniz, 22, of the 400 block of Emerson Avenue, was pronounced dead at the scene of the Saturday night accident on Highway 20 east of Meridian. Passengers in the van, all from Oakland, had injuries ranging from a broken leg to fractured spines and skulls, according to the CHP.

The collision occurred partly on the shoulder of westbound Highway 20, indicating the van driver, Adolfo Jiminez, 23, swerved to avoid Deniz’s eastbound 1998 Chevy Malibu, said Officer Jeff Larson.

A 7-month-old child in the van, Candy Carillo, suffered a fractured skull and was flown to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. All of the passengers were sitting on the floor of the 2002 Ford van, which had no rear seats, according to the CHP.

Investigators were trying to learn Monday what the van and its Oakland occupants were doing in the area, said Larson.

Also undetermined is why Deniz’s car was in the wrong lane. There was no immediate evidence that either driver had been drinking. Results of a tests on Deniz’s blood will not arrive for weeks, said Larson.

An autopsy Monday morning showed Deniz died from a blunt force injury to the head, said Sutter County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Brenda Baker.

Deniz graduated from Yuba City High School in 2004.

A passenger in the Malibu, Marcelino Garcia, 21, who lives on Lincoln Road in Yuba City, was treated for minor injuries at Rideout Memorial Hospital.

Jiminez had a broken leg and was also taken to Rideout.

None of the van occupants were believed to have life-threatening injuries.
