Typical Injuries Resulting from Car and Motor Vehicle Accidents

Motor vehicle accident injuries affect differing parts of the body. Head, neck and back injuries are certainly the most frequent, but motor vehicle collisions also frequently affect internal organs, and upper and lower limbs. The following are among the most common injuries, symptoms and treatment for motor vehicle accident injuries:

Head & Neck injuries

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an extremely serious injury that may result in a car accident. Such a brain injury occurs when the external force of a motor vehicle accident traumatizes the brain. Brain injury may result in permanent or temporary impairment of the brain’s functions. Skull fractures, bruises of the brain (hematoma), and nerve damage in many cases are associated with such brain injury.

Brain injuries are more common in side impact motor vehicle collisions compared to rear-end vehicle accidents. Brain damage in a vehicle accident is frequently associated with the quick acceleration and deceleration of the brain, which causes injury to the point of impact and it is opposite point or contrecoup. Diagnosis of a brain injury can be difficult. Concussions are associated with traumatic brain injury as well as seizures, headaches, dizziness, deficiency of concentration, memory loss, depression or anxiety. CT scans and MRI scans can be used to diagnosis brain injury.

Neck injuries vary from whiplash, probably the most common and annoying injuries caused by car accidents, to disk injuries. Whiplash is an injury frequently related to rear-end impacts. Whiplash injures the soft tissues comprised of nerves, ligaments and muscles. It causes neck pain and limitation of head and neck movement effecting rotation and peripheral vision. It may be temporary or permanent and can affect all aspects of life. If whiplash lasts for more than a few days after a motor vehicle accident physicians will prescribe medications and often refer patients to physical therapists or chiropractors for rehabilitative therapy.

Temporalmandibular joint (TMJ) injury is an injury to the joint and ligaments that allow the jaw to move. Similar to whiplash, the TMJ joint is injured in the acceleration and deceleration of a motor vehicle accident. This may occur with direct or indirect damage to the jaw and effects chewing, eating and speech.

Intervertebral discs make up the spine. The disks lie between each bone (vertebrae) within the spine and form joints giving spines flexibility. Discs are made up of an outer skin called an annulus that surround the interior nucleus, a jelly like substance. If the annulus is torn, a disc may herniate and need surgery. Disks in the neck and spine may bulge, slip or rupture, hence the phrases bulging disc, slipped disc, and ruptured disc. CT scans and MRI scans are often used to diagnosis disc injuries and since such tests are costly doctors will not likely order them immediately after a vehicle accident. It frequently occurs where a disk injury or herniated disc isn’t diagnosed until months following a motor vehicle accident.

Back Injuries

Intervertebral disks in the neck, cervical discs, aren’t the only discs injured in car accidents. Thoracic, mid-back, disks and lumbar, lower back, disks may also be injured in car accidents. Compression fractures may be caused in such accidents causing permanent disability. Also, herniations or bulges may cause spinal-cord compression. Symptoms of spinal injuries include arm and/or leg weakness, paralysis, difficulty breathing, numbness, tingling, and abnormal bowel or bladder control. Disc injuries causing those symptoms may require surgery to eliminate disc material or spinal fusion.

In the same way whiplash injures soft tissues involving the neck, the back nerves, ligaments and muscles may be traumatized by a car accident causing inflammation and pain. Prescriptive medications in many cases are used initially but for continuing pain and inflammation, patients are sent to physical therapists or chiropractors for rehabilitative therapy. Such therapy generally includes infrared heat, hot packs, paraffin bath, hydrotherapy, diathermy, cold packs, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, muscle strengthening, traction, massage, or acupuncture. Another common treatment is steroid injection.

Internal Organs

Internal injuries from a motor vehicle accident include injuries to bowels, kidneys, the spleen, liver, lungs, heart or aorta. Fractured ribs are quite common and could also puncture lungs along with other body organs. Torn spleens are also a frequent injury and may require extensive hospitalization.

Upper limbs

Hands, forearms, arms, shoulders, wrists and fingers in many cases are injured in car accidents as well. Fractures are typical and treatment generally involves splints and casts. Occasionally, such injuries will demand surgery together with splinting and casting. Therapy may also be required for increasing reduced strength and range of flexibility.

Rotator cuff injuries are frequently a result of automobile accidents. MRI scans are often used to diagnosis rotator cuff tears but since these tests are costly doctors will typically not order them immediately after a car accident and will wait for completion of physical rehabilitation before ordering an MRI. Severe shoulder injuries will require shoulder reconstruction.

Lower limbs

Hips, legs, knees, heels, ankles, and feet are also commonly damaged in car accidents. Achilles tendon injuries, ankle sprains, collateral ligament injuries and stress fractures are normal. Fractures in the pelvis, femur, patella, tibia, and ankle may require casting or surgery. For serious hip and knee injuries, total hip replacements or total knee arthroplasty might be necessary following a car accident.

Fleeing hit-run driver injures 5 people, 3 seriously in second crash; Maybe it is time to increase penalties.

WOODLAND HILLS, LOS ANGELES – California

A driver fleeing the scene of an accident ended up colliding with two other cars on Ventura Boulevard at Desoto Avenue in Woodland Hills on Saturday.

Police said the driver of a red convertible got into an accident on another portion of Ventura Boulevard. He then took off and continued eastbound, colliding with two other cars that were stopped at a light at Desoto Avenue at around 11:30 a.m.

Five people were injured, three of them critically.

The driver of the car involved in the original hit-and-run accident said the red convertible rear-ended him. He and his daughter were not injured.

This particular accident really hits home for me, because it happened right or I grew up.

I don’t know what’s going on lately but it seems to me that there is a marked increase of hit-and-run drivers, and people fleeing the scene of accidents that their in.

In this particular accident, five people were injured, three critically, because some idiot decided not to stop after they were in accident.

It seems to me if there were mandatory jail sentences for hit-and-run drivers, with sentences being much tougher for hit-and-run drivers, that the word would get out and more people would stop after they’re in a car accident.

Furthermore, I believe that drivers, who were convicted of hit-and-run driving, should lose their driver’s license privileges for the rest of their life. I think maybe with these types of stiff penalties, accidents like this would not happen, and more people would stop rather than flee the scene of an accident.

Infant Ejected in Rollover Crash

PHELAN – California

A 6-month-old infant who was not strapped into a car seat was thrown from a vehicle Monday morning during a rollover crash, California Highway Patrol officials said.

The baby was transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center. No details on the child’s condition were available.

A 13-year-old boy and 8-year-old girl who also weren’t wearing seat belts suffered minor injuries in the crash, as did the female driver of the vehicle. The driver was also taken to Loma Linda hospital for treatment.

At about 7:30 a.m., CHP officials received calls of a rollover on Johnson Road just north of Palmdale Road, according to Officer Matt Hunt.

When they arrived, they found the female driver holding the infant who had been thrown from the 2002 Dodge Ram pickup truck, Hunt said. The two older children were also outside of the vehicle.

According to an initial investigation, the 41-year-old woman was driving the truck south along Johnson Road toward Palmdale Road when she said she saw a dog in the road. She swerved to avoid striking the animal, causing the truck to roll over onto its roof.

“As it overturned, the infant was ejected from the vehicle,” Hunt said.

The incident is still under investigation and Hunt said no arrests had been made as of Monday afternoon. However, Hunt reminded drivers that anyone traveling with small children should always use a properly installed car seat and seat belts.

“Not only is it the law but it’s always the safest way to travel,” he said. “Anyone who may have problems with (car seats) can go to any CHP station to have assistance with properly installing them into their vehicle.”

This is an example of what I would consider to be endangering children.

There is absolutely no excuse for not having children in your car wearing seatbelts, or not having a 6 month old infant strapped into a proper child seat.

I am sure the mother who was driving the car feels terrible; however, she could have got all 3 of her children killed just because she did not take a little extra time to strap them in with seatbelts and child seats.

Even if you are going just around the corner, make sure your children are properly buckled in.

5 People are dead so far in Los Angeles County So Far During Labor Day Weekend

A fiery crash on the 110 Freeway and several other traffic accidents have claimed the lives of five people on Los Angeles County streets and highways so far over the Labor Day weekend, authorities said.

A motorcyclist was killed Sunday in a crash on Topanga Canyon Boulevard near the Pacific Coast Highway about 2:30 p.m., the California Highway Patrol reported. The victim was pronounced dead at a hospital. Investigators were still on the scene, and no further details were available.

Also, a man died early Sunday when he was trapped under a flaming 1971 Chevy Monte Carlo that had been stopped on the shoulder of the southbound 110 Freeway near 52nd Street.

The 2:40 a.m. incident began when the 18-year-old driver of a 2008 Smart car slowed to avoid rear-ending a vehicle directly ahead, swerved onto the right shoulder and struck the Monte Carlo. Both vehicles burst into flames.

The Monte Carlo rolled over and fatally injured one of three men who had been standing near the car after it had broken down, the CHP reported. Two other victims were taken to hospitals, one in critical condition and one with lesser injuries.

The driver of the Smart car sustained scrapes and was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder and driving under the influence, the CHP said. Names of the suspect and victims were not released.

About 11 p.m. Saturday, a pickup truck driven by a 17-year-old male overturned on the 710 Freeway, killing a female passenger and injuring three others. The accident occurred in the northbound lanes just south of the 91 Freeway, the CHP reported. No names were released.
A 23-year-old man driving a Honda Accord died late Saturday when he hit a power pole and tree on Somerset Ranch Road near Paramount Boulevard in South Gate.

The accident occurred about 10:50 p.m. when the driver exited the 105 Freeway at a high rate of speed, collided with another vehicle and slammed into the pole and tree, said South Gate Police Sgt. Mario Saldivar.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A female passenger was in stable condition at a hospital with minor injuries. No names were released.

And a 43-year-old Irvine man was killed while trying to cross the eastbound lanes of the 101 Freeway after crashing his car near Laurel Canyon Boulevard about 9:40 p.m. Saturday, officials said.

The man had been driving west in a black Lexus when he drifted off the shoulder, struck a guardrail and came to rest in the number one lane, the CHP reported.

He got out of the car, tried to run across the freeway and was hit by a BMW driven by a 76-year-old Encino man. The driver of the Lexus was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not released. The BMW driver was unhurt.

Last year, only one traffic-related fatality was reported in Los Angeles County during the first 36 hours of Labor Day weekend, according to the CHP. Statewide, the CHP has reported six fatalities so far, compared with eight last year.

In Los Angeles County, 227 people have been arrested on suspicion of drunk driving, up from 209 last year, while statewide, the CHP has arrested 1,008 motorists on that charge, compared with 990 last year.

Traffic-related incidents so far this weekend are also higher than the July 4 and Memorial Day numbers this year, authorities said.
“There was a somewhat downward trend, and we were hopeful that would still be the case because people had gotten the message about safe driving,” said CHP Officer Ming Hsu. “Unfortunately, the numbers we have for this period are spiking.”

Horrendous Pomona Car Crash Leaves Two Dead

Two people were killed this Monday in Pomona, California when the unlicensed driver of a stolen car slammed into a Nissan Maxima at high speed early Monday, slicing the Nissan in half in a burst of flames.

According to preliminary reports, the Nissan was attempting to pull into a fast food lot when it was broadsided by an Infiniti G37S traveling at an extremely high rate of speed.

Upon impact, the Nissan split in half and exploded into flames. Parts of the vehicle’s tires were seen melted onto the sidewalk.

“The flames were just sky-high. They were tremendous, tremendous flames,” a witness, Peter Romanowski, told local news. “I’ve never seen an accident like that ever in my life.”

Miguel Herrera, 22, and his pregnant girlfriend Desiree Grajeda, 17, were instantly killed in the Nissan.

Lorraine Martinez, 26, the unlicensed driver of the 2008 Infinity G37S reported stolen Sunday evening, received minor injuries and was arrested and booked for investigation of auto theft and vehicular manslaughter, according to authorities.

The fatal car crash is still under investigation and there is evidence another person may have been in the vehicle during the collision who then fled the scene.

Four people were killed this morning when their truck left Highway 101 near Mussel Shoals and struck a tree.

The accident was reported shortly before 3:30 a.m. just north of Mussel Shoals, according to the California Highway Patrol, which is still investigating the crash.

The driver, Phet Chansy, 53; his wife, Holly Hamm, 40; and their 11-year-old son, Eric Chansy, were declared dead at the scene, said Armando Chavez, senior deputy Ventura County medical examiner. He said a family friend, Monica Sara Sang, 45, of Long Beach, was taken to Ventura County Medical Center, where she died in the operating room.

Chavez said Chansy’s cause of death was blunt force head injuries. Hamm, who was in the passenger seat, died of blunt force head and chest injuries, he said.

Eric died of blunt force chest injuries, and Sang died of multiple blunt force injuries.

Eric and Sang were in the back seat of the truck’s extended cab, Chavez said. Another son sitting in the back seat, also a juvenile, was taken to Ventura County Medical Center, Chavez said.

The pickup truck was towing a boat northbound on Highway 101. No additional information was available this afternoon from the CHP.

This accident is a horrible tragedy. It is unknown by us right now if any of the victims were wearing seatbelts or what caused the truck to go off of the road.

Man dies in Angeles Crest crash; Excessive Speed, Alcohol Likely to Blame for Wreck

A driver heading toward La Cañada on Angeles Crest Highway was killed at about 3 a.m. Friday when he lost control of his car, careened into an embankment and collided with a tree, officials said.

The fatal wreck came just a week after state transportation officials reopened the winding 7-mile stretch of highway between La Cañada Flintridge and Angeles Forest Highway.

Pasadena resident Julio Velasquez, 21, crashed his Honda sedan near mile marker 30.71, a sharp curve about six miles above the Foothill (210) Freeway. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene, said Los Angeles County Fire Capt. Bob Funke.

California Highway Patrol Sgt. Becky Lynch said investigators believe alcohol and excessive speed may be to blame for the crash.

Funke, a first-responder, said Velasquez’s body was discovered by friends with whom he reportedly had been drinking earlier that night in the George’s Gap area of the Angeles National Forest, an isolated spot near Clear Creek.

“They said they were up at George’s Gap drinking, just being social, and the driver of the vehicle decided he wanted to go home. They tried to talk him out of driving, but to no avail,” Funke said. “About 35 or 40 minutes later, [the friends] were driving down and came upon [Velasquez’s] car embedded in the side of a hill. He had run head-on into a tree, and that’s how we found him.”

Funke said he did not see any obvious signs that Velasquez had applied his brakes prior to the crash.

An autopsy and blood-alcohol test is pending this weekend.

Angeles Crest Highway was closed above La Cañada for nearly 17 months to repair massive road washouts and other damage caused by the August 2009 Station fire and subsequent rainstorms.

The CHP has intensified traffic enforcement efforts along the roadway since its reopening on June 3.

Two dead, one missing in Highway 70 crash west of Plumas/Butte County Line

Rescue crew searching for missing 16 year old.

The search will resume today for a 16-year-old passenger in a car that slid off Highway 70 that was missing after the horrible car accident, sparking a dramatic swift water rescue, the California Highway Patrol said Saturday night.

Two people died in the fury crash that happened just west of the Plumas/Butte County line at about 3:30 p.m., the CHP said.

The car crashed happened when a 2001 Pontiac Firebird that was headed west on highway 70, when it passed a motorhome and slid off the edge of the roadway, the CHP said.

The driver of the Pontiac Firebird a 35-year-old man had a 9-year-old boy and the 16-year-old with him in the car when it crashed. The CHP said all of them were from Oroville, California.

The 9-year-old boy was clinging to rocks in the river after the accident. The child then let go of the rocks and attempted to swim to the older man.

The driver and the child were pulled from the water by search-and-rescue teams.

The young boy and the man were given CPR. The boy was transported to Feather River Hospital, while the man was taken to Oroville Medical Center.

Both were pronounced dead at the hospitals, the CHP said. Their names weren’t available.

The search for the missing 16-year-old, whose name also was not available, continued until about 8:30 p.m.

This accident is a horrible tragedy, and it reminds us to take it easy out there. A pleasure ride can turn fatal in an instant if you speed, or lose concentration.

A 37 Year Old Women Passenger Killed on I-5

A 37-year-old Montebello woman was killed Monday in a one-vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 5 near Los Banos, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The woman was identified by the Merced County coroner’s office as Josephine Rendon.

Rendon was a passenger in a 2004 Ford F-250 pickup that was traveling about 60 mph south of Highway 165.

The truck was being driven by 34-year-old Jose Serna of Los Angeles. Alvaro Velasquez, 35, also was a passenger in the truck.

The right rear tire of the truck had a tread separation, and Serna reacted by turning the truck to the left. He lost control of the truck, which spun counterclockwise and traveled across the southbound lanes. The truck then overturned in the center divider.

The victim was partially ejected and pronounced dead at the scene.

She wasn’t wearing a seat belt, the CHP reported. Velasquez and Serna were unhurt.

DUI wasn’t a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.

2 People Hit and Killed by a Big Rig Truck in Pomona

Pomona – A man and woman were struck and killed by a big rig yesterday morning while standing outside their cars on the right shoulder of the eastbound Pomona (60) Freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The 3:15 a.m. accident shut down the eastbound Pomona Freeway between the Chino Valley (71) Freeway and Reservoir Street for more than three hours.

Assistant Coroner Chief Ed Winter identified the victims, who were pronounced dead at the scene, as Otis Lee Hall, 20, of Upland, and Sharon Renee Higgins, 20, of Riverside.

CHP Sgt. Charlie Sampson said Higgins, driving a Mustang, pulled over first, and the Lexus was right behind it. The drivers were standing next to the cars when the big rig drifted onto the right shoulder and hit the vehicles and motorists, then overturned, Sampson said.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, but the investigation was continuing into why Martin Llamas, 47, of Galt, allowed the truck to drift onto the right shoulder, Sampson said.

Llamas escaped serious injury but was taken to a hospital as a precaution, according to the CHP, which reported that one of the victims was thrown over the side of the freeway onto Garey Avenue.

It took a crane to right the overturned big rig, according to the CHP, which reopened all eastbound lanes shortly before 7 a.m.

My prayers and condolences go out to the family and friends of the victims of this tragic accident.

Both victims who were 20 years old were just starting their lives.

It does appear that both victims’ families will have causes of action against the truck driver for Wrongful Death in a State of California action.

I do not see any excuse why the big rig truck would go onto the shoulder of a freeway and kill two persons standing there. It makes me sick to think that all the truck driver had to do was be a little more careful to prevent this tragedy.

Motorists exchanging information after a crash on the 101 Freeway in Sherman Oaks were hit by another vehicle, causing a second accident that killed three.

Authorities say motorists exchanging information after a crash on the Ventura (101) Freeway in Sherman Oaks were hit by another vehicle, causing a second accident that killed three.

The fatal accident happened at about 2:10 a.m. Sunday on the freeway near the Coldwater Canyon Avenue exit, CHP Officer Anthony Martin said.

The California Highway Patrol says three people had been involved in a prior accident and had stepped out of their vehicles to exchange information when they were struck by another vehicle. Three other people were injured.

The identities of the deceased were withheld pending notification of next of kin.

How much do you want to bet that the person or persons who hit and killed the persons on the side of the road exchanging information were drunk or under the influence of drugs and alcohol?

EMT assisting at accident scene struck and killed by vehicle

One accident turned into a second deadly accident Thursday morning on rain-soaked SR 163 just south of Robinson Ave.

According to authorities, an emergency medical technician with San Diego Medical Services who was responding to an accident was struck and killed by a car.

Law enforcement said Esteban Bahena and his partner stopped to help a stranded driver on northbound SR-163 at around 7 a.m. While they were there, an accident happened in the same stretch of highway when a pickup truck and a Toyota Scion collided.

Bahena reportedly crossed the freeway to set up flares to let oncoming drivers know about that accident when he was hit by a Chrysler Sebring.

Bahena’s partner began CPR and after a nearby fire crew stopped to help, they loaded Bahena up and took him to Mercy Hospital in his own ambulance. He was pronounced dead at 8:32 a.m.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a fifth car might have been involved due to the fact the Sebring has rear end damage with blue paint left on the bumper. Officers say a blue car may have struck the Sebring but left the scene.

Bahena, who had been with the city as an EMT for two years, was the first EMT or paramedic to be killed in the line of duty in the company’s 13-year history as the city’s paramedic provider.

The driver of the Sebring was transported to UCSD Hospital in serious condition.

3 Phoenix Arizona Motorcycle riders mowed down and killed After Being Rear Ended in a Horrible Crash. PHOENIX — Arizona

A group of eight motorcycles stopped at a red light in north Phoenix were mowed down from behind by a dump truck early Thursday afternoon, killing three riders and injuring six others, at least one critically, authorities said.

The most seriously injured was an off-duty Phoenix Fire Department captain who was in very critical condition Thursday evening, said Phoenix police spokesman Detective James Holmes.

The motorcyclists were stopped behind a pickup and a small SUV at the red light when the truck driver rammed them from behind, he said. The truck ran over the motorcyclists and continued into the small SUV in front of them, Holmes said.

There was no sign the truck driver was impaired.

Some of the motorcycles burst into flames under the dump truck, while others ended up scattered behind the truck. Television images of the crash site showed a horrifying collection of mangled chrome Harley-Davidson bikes and scattered personal belongings, including pairs of riders’ boots laying in the roadway.

“It’s a horrific scene,” Phoenix Fire Deputy Chief Frank Salomon said.

Some of the injured were airlifted to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix, Salomon said.

The crash occurred about 1 p.m. at the intersection of 27th Avenue and the Carefree Highway. Holmes said at least one of the victims was a woman, but most were men.

Jarrod Cook, a worker at the nearby Ketzal Mexican Grill, said he saw several motorcycles wedged underneath the garbage truck, which caught fire.

“The first thing we saw was a big puff of smoke when the truck lit on fire,” he said.
Cook said he walked over and witnessed a chaotic scene with some of the injured lying on the ground.

Dozens of police and rescue personnel responded to the crash.

Phoenix Fire Department spokesman Jonathan Jacobs told KNXV-TV that witnesses reported seeing several of the motorcycle riders dragged 50 to 75 yards after impact. The three bikers killed were trapped under the truck, Jacobs said.

The 50-year-old driver of the truck was not injured and was being questioned by police. Those in the pickup and SUV also were not hurt.

The Carefree Highway was expected to be closed for several hours as police investigate the crash.

Although I am a California Motorcycle Accident Attorney and Biker Lawyer, I ride through Arizona all of the time. As a matter of fact, I will be riding through Arizona in a couple of weeks. I am absolutely appalled by this accident.

You tell me how a truck driver could not see 8 motorcycles parked at a red light, let alone the red light itself. Absent some catastrophic equipment failure that can be proven, the truck driver in this accident needs to be taken down by the man for murder or vehicular manslaughter.

This accident is absolutely atrocious and horrible.

Head-on car crash on I-8 traps two in Southern California

East County California — Two motorists were trapped and had to be extricated from their cars Sunday night after a head-on collision east of Alpine on Interstate 8, authorities said.

The accident was reported about 9 p.m. on I-8 west of state Route 79. A 66-year-old woman traveling westbound on I-8 in a 1998 Chevrolet Lumina, going about 75 mph, for unknown reasons drove off the south side of the road through a dirt and grass divide and onto the eastbound lanes of I-8, where her vehicle struck two cars, said California Highway Patrol Brian Pennings.

The woman was trapped in her vehicle until emergency crews could extricate her. She was taken by helicopter to a hospital with a broken right ankle and internal injuries, Pennings said.

A 27-year-old driver also had to be extricated from his 2007 Honda Accord, which was struck head-on by the Lumina. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital after he complained of pain, Penning said. The 34-year-old driver of the second car that was struck by the Lumina wasn’t injured.

All eastbound traffic was shut down at Willows Road after the 9 p.m. crash for about an hour, Pennings said.

Friends, family and students are mourning the loss of a 50-year-old father who was killed Friday in a head-on crash near Steele Canyon High School, where he often volunteered for his kids’ drama productions.

He was identified by the Medical Examiner’s Office Saturday as David Norman Reid, who lived with his wife and family in Spring Valley, California.

Reid was driving a Dodge Caravan east on state Route 94 about a mile west of the school when the driver of a Ford Mustang crossed over the double-yellow line and collided with him head-on, the California Highway Patrol said.

Reid’s 17-year-old son, who was in the passenger seat, suffered serious injuries and underwent surgery Saturday, said the school’s assistant principal, Jeff Kover.

The driver of the Mustang, former student Andrew Bellatti, 18, and his 16-year-old female passenger, a current student, also were injured. They were reportedly released from the hospital Saturday.

It was unknown why Bellatti had crossed into oncoming traffic, but investigators said speed was a factor.

The speedometer on the Mustang was frozen at about 80 mph, said CHP Officer Brian Pennings. He said there was no indication that Bellatti had been racing, or that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the accident.

The road was wet, but it was not raining at the time, he said.

Reid’s son followed in his older sister’s footsteps by joining the charter high school’s drama club, and their parents became well-known volunteers over the past several years.

Reid did everything from building sets and chaperoning to serving at concession stands during plays.
“He’s easily one of the nicest guys you could meet. He always had a good joke or story,” Kover said. “He was there any time we had an event going on, a production or a show. They were always helping out.”

High school records show that Bellatti, who graduated last year, was a pitcher and first-baseman on Steele Canyon’s baseball team. He signed with the Tampa Bay Rays after turning down a scholarship offer to Cal State Fullerton.

Last summer, Bellatti pitched for Tampa Bay’s rookie team in the Gulf Coast League. Professional baseball’s spring training begins next month.

It would appear from the basic facts of this case that the driver of the Mustang was speeding way over the speed limit when he crossed into oncoming traffic and is most probably responsible for the wrongful death of David Norman Reid.
